Norman was adopted as a toddler along with several of his 9 surviving siblings, after his mother died.

His biological parents were: Edward Lehr #37129494 and Ella Vesta (Derhammer) Lehr #37129520

He excelled in Chemistry at High School in Easton, a passion that became his life's work and which eventually led him to the Atomic Research Laboratory at UC Berkley.

In the early part of his career, Norman was a US Army Captain.

He married in 1946 in Miami and they had a daughter, who predeceased him by 7 months.

He and his wife separated a few years later and he never remarried.

Norman retired in the early 1970s to a quiet rural town in Upstate New York.
