George Willis Callaway, 73, of Raleigh, died in a local hospital at 5 p.m. Monday after an extended illness.
A retired coal miner, he had worked for the Raleigh Coal and Coke Co. for 30 years. He was a veteran of World War I.
Born April 4, 1893, at Trap Hill, he was a son of the late Thomas Jefferson and Margaret Pomeroy Callaway.
Survivors include his wife, Maryetta of Raleigh; one son, Robert of Waynesburg, Pa.; two daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Emogene) Griffith of Shady Spring and Miss Betty Mae Callaway of Greensobro, N.C.; three brothers, Robert of Beckley, Clarence of Richmond, Va. and Okey of Raleigh; two sisters, Mrs. Eliza Morris and Mrs. Stella Robertson, all of Beckley; four step-daughters, Mrs. Willis (Esther) Hendrick of Beckley, Mrs. Golden (Velma) Beane and Mrs. Lewis (Ruth) Gyovai, both of Naomi, and Mrs. Wylie (Vione) O'Neal of Sparta, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Calfee Chapel with the Rev. Harold Reedle officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park.
The body will remain at Calfee Funeral Home where friends may call after 5 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Harold Yost, Frank Lacek, Clayton Meadows, Dale Meadows, George Mays and Guy Pennington.
