Gy Sgt Edward Ray Franks, Sr Ret. went to be with the Lord Thursday, March 13, 2014. He was born in Shreveport, LA September 4, 1923 to George Watson Franks and Pearl Franks. He was preceded in death by his first wife, and mother of his six children, Mary Lou Hanson Franks; one grandson, Robert Huck, Jr; three brothers: Jewel Franks, Marshall Franks, and Tillman Franks; and one sister, Mary Campisi. He is survived by his wife Mary Louise Franks of Eros, LA; One brother, Rev. Billy Franks of Shreveport, LA; Three sons: Edward Ray Franks, Jr of Waskom, TX and wife Linda; John Franks of Campbell, CA and wife Kathi; and Fred Franks of Red Lion, PA. He is survived by three daughters: Marilyn Huck of Dallastown, PA and husband Bob; Martha Humble of El Dorado, AR and husband Rick; and Mary Ellen Wilson of Sherwood, AR. He is survived by 18 grand-children, 19 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and honorary family members.
Ray Franks served in the Army Air Corp during WWII, and in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean War and Vietnam War. After 34 total years of service, he retired from the Marine Corps in 1968. In 1969, Ray and his wife settled in El Dorado, Arkansas.
He was a member of Oakmont Church of God in Shreveport, LA and First Church of God in El Dorado Arkansas for 30 years and Liberty Grove Church of God in Eros, LA for the past ten years.
He was a member of the Child Evangelism Fellowship and a Gideon. Ray started a puppet ministry in the 80's and became children's favorite at many churches in Arkansas and the surrounding area. His puppet ministry reached as far as Guatemala when he helped his brother Rev. Billy Franks build a church there. He received a community service award from Gov. Bill Clinton and the State of Arkansas in 1988 for his puppet ministry. He will long be remembered as the Puppet Man in El Dorado.
Franks was a patriot. He raised and lowered the flag at the El Dorado Court House every day for many years. He also put flags out around the courthouse and on military graves for Veteran's Day and Memorial Day every year. He placed thousands of flags on unknown soldiers graves.
Ray and Mary Lou owned a business, The New Yorker, on the historic downtown El Dorado square for almost 20 years. In his high school years, Franks was a drum major at Byrd High School in Shreveport, LA, and could still twirl a baton. He was also known for his yo-yo tricks. Most importantly, Ray was a man of God. His desire was for all who knew him to know Christ. He was a great teacher and father and we will all love and miss him until we meet again.
Funeral services will be held at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in West Monroe, LA at 10 am on March 18. Interment and full military honors will be at 2 pm at Forest Park West Cemetery in Shreveport, LA. Visitation will be 5-8 pm, Monday, March 17 at the funeral home in West Monroe.
