He fought in the Civil War between March 1865 and October 1866 enlisting as a Private with Company A, 3rd Regiment, Michigan Infantry, he served 1 year and 7 months.
On 30 Jan 1868 at Center Line, Macomb County, Michigan at the Mt. Clement Church he married Mary C. Kaltz, they had eight children; Gertrude; Francis J.; Joseph John; Louis J; John Bernard; Mary Ann; Joseph Edward, and a child whose name is unknown in 1875.
Franz owned property at Warren Township, Macomb County, Michigan in Section 16 (bounded by present day Ryan, Van Dyke, 12 Mile and 11 Miles Roads. In 12 Sep 1883 in North Branch, Lapeer County, Michigan he owned property on Snoblin Road which consisted of a 40 acre farm.
On 24 Aug 1898 Franz married his second wife, Elizabeth Teller, in Mayfield Township, Lapeer County, Michigan. They can be found in the 1900 census at North Branch, Lapeer County, Michigan where Francis is listed as head of house, working as a farmer, with wife Elizabeth.
Franz Joseph died 7 Jan 1907 at North Branch, Lapeer County, Michigan of heart disease at the age of 64 years, 5 months and 7 days.
