Fred V. Gainer, 85, a former principal, teacher and coach in the Laurel School District, Laurel, died on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at 2:45 p.m. He was born on June 24, 1928 in Latonia, W.V., the son of the late Lee and Ola Whiting Gainer. He was one of 10 children. Fred received his bachelor of science degree from Glenville State College, Glenville, W.Va. and his master of science degree from the University of West Virginia in Morgantown, W.Va. Mr. Gainer taught and coached at St. Marys in West Virginia for 10 years, coming to Lord Baltimore in Ocean View for one year. He then moved to Laurel and remained there for 25 years as teacher, coach, assistant principal and principal. He retired in 1989 after being principal at Laurel High School for his last 13 years. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Eldred, Harold, Merrill, Scott, Lynn, Ronnie and two sisters. He was also preceded in death by half brothers, Blair, Harley, Tom, and Lloyd. His wife passed on Dec. 13, 2013. They were married for 64 years and were reunited in Heaven on their anniversary day. Fred is survived by his two sons, Frederick Lee and David Lynn of Laurel and one daughter, Anna Maria Gainer Pierson of Bridgeport, W.Va. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Jason Gainer, Jessica Gainer, Justin Gainer and Briar Patterson and four great grandchildren, Ivy Gainer, Mackenzie Gainer, Layla Gainer and William Patterson. Fred is also survived by one brother, James Gainer of Elyria, Ohio. At Freds request, there will be no formal memorial service. It will be a quiet family affair. Interment will be held in Stalnaker Cemetery in Glenville.
