A protege of Hawaii's late queen, Kapiolani, died Saturday afternoon. She was Mrs. Violet K. K. Beckley Maertens of 1004 11th Avenue. Services for Mrs. Maertens, 81, will be conducted by the Christian Science Church at 7:30 tonight at Borthwick Mortuary. Friends may call at the mortuary from 7 to 8 tonight. Cremation will follow and inurnment will be at a later date. Mrs. Maertens was the widow of Carl A. G. Maertens. She was born February 2, 1877, in Kohala, Hawaii. She was also a cousin of the late William Bishop Taylor. The daughter of the late Maria K. Beckley Kahea and the stepdaughter of David K. Kahea, Mrs. Maertens was one of the first pupils of the Kamehameha School for Girls. She was also a member of the Kamehameha Alumnae Association. Mrs. Maertens's mother was a high chiefess and granddaughter of Hoolulu, who was the father of Kameeaumoku. Kameeaumoku was a descendent of Kamehameha I. Mrs. Maertens's mother also was a member of the courts of Queen Emma and Kapiolani. Survivors include: three sons, William C. M. Kamehameha and Frederick Maertens; four daughters, Mrs. Fred Ziesenhenne of Los Angeles, Mrs. Victor R. (Marijane) Burner, Mrs. Julia Bradshaw and Mrs. Catherine Giltner; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
