Willie Raymond "Snookie" Barrington, longtime resident of Throckmorton, Texas, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014 at his home in Throckmorton. Mr. Barrington was 10 days shy of his 92nd birthday. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 15, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Throckmorton with Rev. Pete Bradfield and Rev. Pete Parker officiating. Interment will take place immediately following the services at Throckmorton Cemetery under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes.
One of 12 children, Snookie was born March 23, 1922 in Throckmorton to Myrtle (Haney) and Robert Wallace "Steve" Barrington. He married Mattie Breeden in Anson on May 18, 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and earned a Bronze Star and Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Snookie was Honorably discharged on April 19, 1946 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
Snookie served on the Throckmorton Volunteer Fire Department and City Council; a member of the Throckmorton Chamber of Commerce and Boy Scouts; he helped with the effort to get the Throckmorton Veterans Monument established and very involved with the community. Snookie was a retired mechanic and earned Workhorse of the Year Award in 1972.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Myrtle Barrington; a daughter, Barbara Faye McCormick; 5 brothers, Ralph, Tommy, Robert, Eddie, Steven; and 4 sisters, Martha, Rosie, Marie, Ruby.
Snookie is survived by his wife of 72 years, Mattie Barrington of Throckmorton; 2 sons, Kenneth Raymond Barrington and wife Sheila of Wichita Falls, Texas, Jerry Barrington and wife Lucy Gay of Throckmorton; brother, Freddy Barrington; sister, Katy Clement; 6 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
