One of eight children, Dr. Stanton graduated from the University of Maryland in 1910 with a degree in agriculture. He went on to earn his PhD there in 1921 and worked as an agronomist for the US Department of Agriculture until his retirement in 1951 as Senior Agronomist.

He had a long and distinguished career and made many significant contributions to his field. His extensive research involving breeding disease-resistant oat variteies. For more than 30 years, Dr. Stanton maintained the World Collection of Oats in the U.S.D.A.

In recognition of his many achievements and publications, the American Society of Agronomy elected him a Fellow of the Society in 1943, and he was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Agriculture by Iowa State University in 1945.
