Francis Arthur Crawford, a retired Potlatch Corp. employee, died of cancer Saturday at his Clarkston home. He was 81.
He was born Aug. 3, 1917, to Arthur Brian and Meda Angeline Wamsley Crawford in Ilo, a town that in 1920 merged with Vollmer to form the town of Craigmont. He attended school in Peck and Craigmont. During school he enjoyed athletics, especially basketball. He attended college in Pocatello, Weiser and Moscow.

During World War II he served four years in the U.S. Army as a cartographer in Europe.

He married Winifred J. Smith Carson Sept. 29, 1942, in Los Angeles. Following his discharge in 1946 he moved to Clarkston and began working for Potlatch Forests Inc., which later became Potlatch Corp. He retired from Potlatch in 1979. His wife died July 3, 1990.

He married Norma Huber Ramsden Sept. 27, 1997, in Lewiston. They made their home in Clarkston, where she survives.
He was a member of the First Church of God in Clarkston where he drove the Sunday school bus for many years and coached the church basketball team. He enjoyed gardening, traveling in his motorhome and oil painting. In later years he was a member of the Church of the Nativity (Episcopal) in Lewiston.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Iris Eileen Guidice and Shirley Rae Smith, both of Spokane; a stepdaughter, Valerie Brook of Clarkston; two sisters, Eleanor M. Raspone of Clarkston and Geraldine M. Johnson of Canby, Ore.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
