The Bandera New Era, Thursday, September 7, 1933,

W.S. Mayfield dies of car accident injuries. William Samuel Mayfield aged 60 years, died at his home 1133 West San Antonio Street, at 11:40 am Saturday.His death resulted from a fracture of the skull sustained Wednesday morning when his car was wrecked on the San Marcous-Lulling highway near Fentress. He never regained consciousness.

The decessed was born January 29, 1873, in Hunt County and was son of B.M and Elizabeth Mayfield, who moved from Mississippi to Texas about 1870. The family moved to Bandera County when he was a little boy and he lived all his life there until he moved with his family to San Marcos twelve years ago. He was proprietor of the Mayfield Mattress Factory which he established soon after moving here. Previously he had been engaged in the mattress business for several years and earlier in life had served as deputy sheriff under Sheriff R. S. Smith in Bandera County and was recognized as a fearless and efficient peace officer.

Early in his boyhood he became a Christian and joined the Baptist church and remained a devoted Christian until his death. His church_______? _____ a loyal member of the Masonic lodge. As a citizen, husband and father he was faithful and true, his influence and support being always given to the promotion of good government and the highest ideals of citizenship.

He was married in 1895 to Miss Adah Humphreys of Medina and to them were born seven children, all of whom are living and were present at his funeral.

He is survived by his widow and the following members of his family" five daughters, Mrs Olive DeLong, New Braunfels: Mrs Carrie Bowers, San Marcos: Mrs Louis Coleman, Junction: Mrs C. G. Milligan, Houston: Mrs Mamie Mayfield, San Marcos: two sons, W. T. Mayfield, Gonzalez and Greydon Mayfield, Kerrville; and the following brothers and sisters: Walter, Brice and James Mayfield of Medina; H. D Mayfield of Port Arthur, Mrs T. A. Buckner of San Marcos, Mrs L. A. Holister of Yoakum and E. J. Banta of Medina.

Funeral services were held at the home at 2 p.m. Sunday conducted by the Rev. W. A. Bowen, pastor of the First Baptist Church assisted by the Rev. R. L. Wittner pastor of New Braunfels Baptist church. A male quartet composed of Ellis Younger, Dr. S. B. Slaughter, R. A Tampke and A. O. Coers sang two numbers.

Interment was in the city cemetery where the Masonic lodge had charge of the services which was conducted by Worshipful Master Herbert Nix. The quartet sang two numbers during this service - taken from San Marcos Daily News.
