John came to America in 1841 and settled in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. In 1850 he married Elizabeth Wallis and left a few months later to come to California in a covered wagon. Two years later his wife joined in him in Sonora, CA. In 1857 they settled near Modesto on the Stanislaus River. He ran a ferry and had a farm there. Carpenter Road in Modesto is named in his honor.

John H. Carpenter, a former resident of Westport in this county, died this morning at Fresno after an illness of several weeks. He was aged 71 years and was a native of England. He was a pioneer Californian and was a member of the Stanislaus County Society of California Pioneers. He was also a member of the Masonic order, with a membership at Reedley, Fresno county, and the funeral will take place from the Masonic hall on Monday next immediately after the arrival of the 2:05 p. m. train. The remains will be conveyed from the train to the lodge room. Deceased moved to Reedley about three years ago and prior to that time was engaged in farming in Westport for many years. In his earlier residence in California he was engaged in mining. He was a clever gentleman, respected by all who knew him and many old friends will kindly remember the deceased as a good citizen and neighbor. He leaves several grown children.
