Laura A. Nielsen Succumbs at 58

Spanish Fork - Death came Thursday to Mrs. Laura Andrus Nielsen at her residence here following a long illness. Mrs. Nielsen, the wife of Ralph J. Nielsen, was 58 years of age.

She was born in Spanish Fork March 18, 1898, the daughter of Alma and Serena Gardner Andrus. Her earlier years were spent in this city, where she grew to maturity and began her education. She was a graduate of the Spanish Fork High School in 1916 and later completed three years of undergraduate study at the USAC in Logan.

She finished her college studies at the Brigham young University in Provo and was given a bachelor's degree in the field of education. Later she did graduate work at the University of Utah, from which institution she received a Master's Degree in the educational field. She had taught at Escalante High School, Dividend School, at Rexburg and Teton Schools in Idaho, and in San Bernardino and Downey schools in California.

During her years in California she also did graduate work at UCLA. She went to Washington, D. C., in 1930 where she taught for two years at Central and Western High Schools. Following this she held the post of supervisor of public assistance in that area for four years.

During the years of 1936 and 1937 she was a social worker for the National Red Cross, having seen duty at Cincinnati, Ohio, during the flood disaster period of 1937. Later she became a member of the staff of the Department of Public Welfare in Virginia, a post she held from 1938 to 1952. IN was during this period of service that she received a special commendation from President Franklin D. Roosevelt for her social work with the armed services.

During the years in Washington and Virginia she continued her studies and graduate work at American University, Catholic University, and George Washington University.

she is survived in addition to her husband by one daughter of McLean, Virginia, and the following brothers and sisters, Mrs. C. W. (Lucy-a twin) Wilkins, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Roy (Ann) Tygesen, Magna; A. A. Andrus, R. H. Andrus, and J. G. Andrus, all of Spanish Fork; Dr. J. G. Andrus, Pegosa Springs, Colo.; and Dr. L. M. Andrus, King City, California. Also surviving are four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in the Spanish Ford Third-Sixth Ward Chapel. Friends may call at the Lowell J. Crabb Mortuary Sunday evening between 7 and 9 p. m. or Monday prior to services. Interment will be in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery.
