James was born February 12, 1919 in rural Adair County, Iowa; the son of James David and Flora Fern (Fay) Porter. His marriage to Mary Anne Long took place on September 17, 1941 in Grant City, MO and this past year they celebrated 65 years together. James served his country during World War II enlisting in the Army Air Corps' 82 Airborne. During his working career James was employed by the DOT as well as the Buckingham and Red Ball Trucking Companies. From 1960 until his retirement in 1979 he owned and managed the Porter Laundromat in Winterset.

James and Mary Anne enjoyed camping and fishing in Minnesota and Iowa and wintering in Arizona and Texas. He also loved to hunt, play pool and was a self-taught fiddler.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Anne of Winterset; a daughter, Linda Dillinger and husband Larry of Bella Vista, AR; a son David Porter and wife Martha of State Center; a daughter-in-law, Victoria Porter of Des Moines, 9 grandchildren (Jeffrey, Ramona, Eric, Karri, Gregory, Kristine, Rodney, Lori and LeAnna), 18 great grandchildren (Jeramy, Julie, Ethan, Evan, Branten, Owen, Courtney, Kenadey, Grace, Jackson, Ross, Georgia, Jalen, Tia, Anthony, Andrew, Brock, Salena), and many nieces and nephews.

His parents, an infant sister, Ethel; 3 sisters, Ruth, Dorothy and Joy; 2 brothers, John and Cecil, and his son, Larry Porter preceded him in death.
