Mrs. Putney Dies After A Long Illness
Woman Once Prominent Here Succumbs At Hospital of Paralysis; Services Sunday
The long illness of Mrs. Lida G. Monnett Putney, a name once so prominent here, culminated in death at Jasper county hospital at eight o'clock this Friday morning. Stricken with paralysis at her Orlando, Florida home in early April, she was brought here by her daughter, Mrs. Harry Eger, of this city the latter part of May and had since been a patient of the local institution. She had failed gradually during the intervening weeks and several days ago entered a coma from which she failed to emerge.
Mrs. Putney's decline began about nine years ago when she was stricken with the disease that eventually was to cause her death. She gradually improved following that attack and in time made almost complete recovery. She was seized with a series of paralytic strokes during last April, but again she made partial reccovery to the extent she could be brought here.
Mrs. Putney was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, on February 4, 1853. Her maiden name was Elizabeth G. Fame, but she was more familiarly known by the name Lida. Her girlhood was spent in the vicinity of her birth. In 1878 she was married to Miltmimore Libby, who passed away in 1896. A few years later she moved to Evanston, Illinois, where she was living at the time of her marriage to Fletcher F. Monnett in 1909. It was at that time she came to Jasper county to make her home, Mr. Monnett having large farm land holdings near this city. He passed away a year later and she continued to reside here until 1925 when she was married to Mr. Putney. Since that time her home had been in Orlando but until recent years she frequently visited here and occasionally came here to spend the summer and look after her land interests and visit her daughter.
Mr. Monnett was a brother of Miss Cordelia Monnett, who donated the ground and Monnett residence on College avenue to the Methodist church conference board from which grew the present Monnett School for Girls.
Surviving besides the daughter, are the husband, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Putney was a member of the Presbyterian church. She was active in church and welfare work and for fifteen years was in direct operation of her land holdings south and north of Rensselaer. She was a kind and charitable woman who was beloved by all.
The remains were removed to the Snyder Funeral Home from where services will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday. The Rev. S.H. Lloyd will be in charge of the service. Burial will be at Weston cemetery.
