Husband of Mary Pate. Stepbrother to Charlie Goodnight of the Goodnight Trail in Texas. Circa 1850 he was living in Texas and moved to Colorado about 1884. He was married to Martha Lane Jan. 5, 1860 and they had 4 children : Lou Emma, James, Calvin and William. After she died, he married Mary Pate on Dec. 3, 1877. They had 13 children: Edwin, Flora, Claude, Cliffie, Wesley Pat, Rubie, Van, Noy, Mattie, Hal, Lee, Fayette Dan, and Frank.

On 20 March 1886, an election was held to establish and organize the County of Knox in Texas. J.W. Sheek was the presiding officer of Precinct Two. His son, W.A. Sheek was in attendance at the organization.
