Memphis Daily Appeal
April 7 1872
Yesterday Colonel Robert Balch was shot in Crittenden county by the Sheriff, Mr. Hardin. The difficulty which produced this sad result was about the possession of some land. The Sheriff, it appears, had a writ for the ejection of Colonel Balch from a place he occupied. the latter refused to retire, and therefore was shot by the Sheriff. The deceased was a tall, portly man, who was well known in memphis, having lived at the Overton three or four years ago.
Confederate Military Service: Co. C, F, & S, 3rd (Forrest's) Tennessee Cavalry. Military records list him as Private, Major and Lt. Col. From the service record: Complexion fair, hair dark, eyes blue. 6' 1 and half inches tall.
