Ross Henry Pittman Jr., 76, of Tifton died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at Tift Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Anne's Episcopal Church with Father Lonnie Lacy officiating. Interment will follow at Oakridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Albritton-Beaumont Funeral Directors. Active pallbearers are Bill Reinhardt, Larry Mims, John Brownlee, Steve Brownlee, Kevin Pittman and Skip Hill. Mr. Pittman was born Dec. 18, 1937 in Tift County to the late Ross Henry Pittman Sr. and Mary Pittman Berg. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Ara Olivia Dodson Pittman, who died March 2, 2001, and an infant son, Robert Samuel Pittman. He attended the Tift County schools, later graduating from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, where he was later to serve on the Board of Trustees. Mr. Pittman went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Georgia, where he was a member of the Gridiron Secret Society. As a young man, he was active in the Boy Scouts, where he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Mr. Pittman was a former board member for Hospice of Tift Area. On October 1, 1994, he was appointed to the Tift County Hospital Authority. He was past-president of the Georgia Heart Association and was on the Board of Directors of the Georgia State Association of Life Underwriters. He served as a representative for the Georgia State Chamber of Commerce for several years and was a member of the Air National Guard for six years. He was an insurance executive and owner of The Pittman Company in Tifton for many years, where he was a Chartered Life Underwriter. Mr. Pittman was a member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ross Henry "Hank" Pittman III and Terrilee of Tifton; three grandchildren, Stephanie Lee Pittman, John Ross Pittman and Joseph Henry Pittman, all of Tifton; a brother, Thomas H. Pittman of Tifton; and a sister, Betty Certain of St. Simons.
