Mrs. Phillips, Ex-Diplomat's Wife, at 84
Mrs. Caroline Astor (Drayton) Phillips, 84, of Highover in North Beverly, died Thursday at her Winter suite in the Hotel Vendome, Boston.
She was the wife of William Phillips, who served as undersecretary of state during the administration of president Franklin Roosevelt, ambassador to Italy in 1938-1941, minister to the Netherlands and Belgium, and the nation's first minister to Canada. He also served as special ambassador to India.
Mrs. Phillips was born in New York and was a member of the Chilton Club.
In addition to her husband whom she married in England in 1910 while he was attached to the U. S. Embassy in London, Mrs. Phillips leaves two daughters, Mrs. Elliott B. Strauss of Washington, D.C. and Mrs. John W. Bryant of Beverly Farms; three sons, Drayton of Hamilton, Christopher H. of New York, former state senator from Beverly, and William Phillips, Jr. of Ridgefield, Ct.; a brother, William A. Drayton of Bantam, Ct.; 13 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Dr. Theodore Ferris of Trinity Church, Boston, will officiate at services there Saturday at noon. Internment will be in North Beverly.
