Stanley was born June 27, 1918, at Colesburg, IA, to John and Norma (Barnhart) McDowell. He was raised and educated in the area attending school locally. He remained in the area and farmed. Stanley was united in marriage to Mary Leonard on December 28, 1943, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elkader. Four children were born to this union. Together they farmed northeast of Colesburg on Skip Level Road over the years. In December of 1984, they retired and moved into Colesburg. Stanley died suddenly on Wednesday, November 30, 2005, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. He was eighty-seven years of age. Stanley was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and of the Northeast Iowa Antique Association. He will be remembered as one who enjoyed playing cards, gardening, picking raspberries and cooking, especially for his peanut butter cookies. Survivors include four children, Fran (Ken) DeMarce, Cedar Rapids, Bruce (Linda) McDowell, Oskaloosa, Robert (Vicky) McDowell, Edgewood and Anita (Ralph) Kratochvil, Eau Claire, WI; nine grandchildren, David Hamer, Dennis (Melissa) Hamer, Cheree Wheeler, Shannon (Michael) McCabe, Brad (Angie) McDowell, Tyler McDowell, Tony McDowell, Ralph Kratochvil II, Noah Kratochvil; four great-grandchildren, Clayton Wheeler, Aaron McDowell, Blake McDowell and Kionna McCabe. Stanley was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, on August 9, 1994; his parents; two brothers and three sisters.
