Obituary printed in 1995 Blair, Nebraska newspaper

Marie R. Shaffer, 86

Marie Shaffer was born in Nebraska. Her father, Emil Baltzer, was born in Denmark and her mother, Mary (Nelson) in Illinois.

She attended high school, but when she was 15, she completed her sophomore year of high school and married 20-year old Royal "Roy" Shaffer. He was born in St. Louis,Missouri, but they lived in Omaha, and all their children were born in Nebraska.

Their marriage lasted many years, until Royal passed away in 1950.

They were blessed with four sons and three daughters. One son, Stephen Dryden Shaffer, did not survive birth.

The 1930 US Census shows the Shaffers living on South 20th Avenue in Omaha*.
Royal J. Shaffer (23), plumber, automobile factory
Marie R. Shaffer (20), wife
Shirley R. Shaffer (4), daughter
Paul D. Shaffer (3), son
Mary N. Shaffer (1), daughter
Leonard H. Sorenson(26),bro-in-law,b.Iowa,wholesale salesman
Violet P. Sorenson (23)sister-in-law
Beverly A. Sorenson (3), niece

* in the 1930 census the enumerator erred in writing "20th Ave" for the Shaffer family. They were renting the house at 3514 So. 21st St. (two doors north of our house: we lived at 3524 S. 21st St). My Aunt Violet, Marie's sister and her family were also living with them in that tiny house.

By 1935, Roy and Marie and their family were living at 6564 Lake Street in Omaha. City directories show that Roy continued as a plumber, but by 1940 was in building construction.

The 1953 Omaha City Directory lists Marie as a widow of Roy Shaffer, still living at 6564 Lake in Omaha.

Services were Monday, December 11, 1995 at Boyd E. Braman Mortuary for Marie R. Shaffer, 86, of Omaha and formerly of Fort Calhoun. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Left with memories are her children and their spouses, 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and a sister, Violet Vorce.
