Son of Colonel William Crawford (d. 1782) by his mistress, Ann Matthews Connell (d. 1784), who was a niece of his wife, Hannah Vance Crawford (d. 1817). This identification is presented in the meticulously documented booklet, The Case For Declaring That Colonel William Crawford And Ann Connell Are The Parents Of William, James, Nancy And Polly Connell (1992), by Diana Glynn and Wayne Bracken, a copy of which is in my possession. The second appendix to an earlier work by the same authors, The Case For Declaring That Thomas Mounts Married Nancy, Daughter Of Ann Connell...(1991, revised 1992), is entitled 'Thomas Mounts acted on behalf of James Connell, son of Ann Connell', and details James' inheritance.

James Connell married Sarah Bennett in Nelson County, Kentucky, September 28, 1785.

Best source I've found listing his children and their spouses was the deed, Henry Crist of Bullitt County and State of Kentucky to the widow and heirs of James Connell dec'd, filed in Bullitt County Deed Book I, page 257, on October 13, 1839, which shows that the Connell family lived on the East Fork of Coxes Creek.

Tax lists show that in addition to his home tract of 146 acres on Coxes Creek in Bullitt County, James also had 400 acres on the Kentucky River in Gallatin County, first entered in the name of William Crawford.
