Earl Parker
Prominent retired businessman Earl A. Parker, 97, of the Golden Age Care Center, Centerville, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 1984 at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital.
Services were held Saturday, Aug. 4 at the Miller-Wehrle Funeral Home.
He was born and raised on a farm near Waterloo and moved to Oskaloosa in 1899. It was there he became interested in the clothing business.
He came to Centerville in March 1907. On July l, 1910 Parker and Clyde Triebswetter bought the McCreary Clothing Store on the south side of the square. The partnership lasted about four years, then the two went separate ways into stores of their own. Parker was at the south side location until 1929, then moved to the building now occupied by Trotter's Clothing. He remained active in business until retiring in 1982.
Earl Parker married Darley Doggett on June 30, 1909 and she preceded him in death in 1958. They had a daughter, Dorothy Genevieve Meeher, who died in 1972.
In 1960 he married Grace Craig and she preceded him in death in 1968.
He was a member of the Drake Avenue Christian Church. His lodge affiliations included Elk's Lodge 940, Masonic Lodges of St. John's Commandary 21, Euclid Chapter 43, Chalder Council 48 and Blue Lodge Jackson 42.
Survivors include grandchildren Robert Meeher, Davenport; Marilyn Lampe, Lakewood, Col.; stepdaughter Kaye Washburn, Centerville; three step-granddaughters, five great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.
