Benjamin BARKER, 56, of Longfellow Place, Boston, an associate campaign director of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston since 1973, died Sunday at Massachusetts General Hospital.
A graduate of Jamaica Plain High School and Middlesex College, he received a degree in veterinary medicine in the early 1940s. After practicing veterinary medicine for a year, he was a field worker for the United Jewish Appeal in Maine and New Jersey.
In 1948, as the first director of Boston's Zionist House, Mr. BARKER assisted in gathering local aid for Israel during the war. He worked with the State of Israel Bonds organization in Boston for 17 years, first as New England regional director, then as Boston city manager.
Bernard Olshansky, Executive director of CJP said: "Whether at the Hecht House or at Zionist House or Israel Bonds or CJP, BARKER was at the center of events."
In addition, Mr. BARKER had primary responsibility for the trades and professions division of CJP and was associated with youth activities at Hecht House.
He leaves his wife, Pauline; a daughter, Susan CALISH of Taunton; two sons, Lawrence BARKER of Israel and Fred BARKER of Brookline, and five grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
