He was a NZ rugby rep (All Black) who played 3 matches on the tour of Australia in 1907. He later took up refereeing and controlled several major games, including NZ v New South Wales in 1923. He was an accomplished cricketer and rifleman, and was the father in law to Harold Simon, an All Black in 1937.
