Son of John Lowell Gardner and Catharine Elizabeth Peabody. Married Harriet Sears Amory on November 4, 1860 in Boston, MA. They had three children: Joseph Peabody Gardner, Jr. b. September 13, 1861 Boston, MA d. October 16, 1886 Hamilton, MA, William Amory Gardner b. December 3, 1863 Boston, MA, d .February 8, 1930 Groton, MA and Augustus Peabody Gardner b. November 5, 1865 Boston, MA d. January 14,1918 Macon, GA. After Joseph Peabody Gardner's death in 1875, his three teenage sons were adopted by his brother and sister-in-law, John “Jack” and Isabella Gardner.
