US Congressman. Elected as a Republican to represent Pennsylvania's 20th Congressional District in the Forty-first Congress, he served from 1869 to 1871. Gilfillan graduated from Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, was admitted to the bar in 1859 and became an attorney in Mercer. He was Prosecuting Attorney for Venango County from 1861 to 1865. Defeated for reelection to the US House in 1870, he was a Delegate to the 1872 Republican National Convention before giving up both politics and his law practice to devote himself to banking.
