Aubrey D. Gates was the son of William D. Gates and Parthenia Elizabeth Campbell. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in 1930. He married Margaret Edith Horsfall on August 2, 1930 in Monticello, Arkansas. He was a county agent and Associate Director of the Arkansas Agricultural Extension Service, later the Director of the Field Service Division of the American Medical Association.
