Katherine Geraldine Hamlin, 96, a long-time resident of the Hallsburg community, passed away February 18, 2014, at her home. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m., Friday, February 21, in Pavelka Cemetery, Hallsburg.

Katherine was born in Purdon, Texas,to the late William Albert and Henryetta Scarborough Winters Sr., the ninth of 15 children. She married Louis Francis Hamlin on December 10, 1934, in Brownwood, Texas.

At first, Louis and Katherine made their home in McLennan and Travis Counties, where all four of their children were born. About 1941, the family moved to a sheep ranch on the Colorado River near Indian Creek in far south Coleman County, where they raised turkeys.

After Louis joined the U.S. Navy Seabees in 1942, Katherine and the children moved back to McLennan County, to be joined by Louis in 1945. The family lived in Mart until 1948, when they purchased a homestead in the Battle Lake Community. They lived there until 1960, when the family moved, for the last time, to Hallsburg, to live on a small farm near Mart Lake.

Hallsburg was not yet incorporated, and the once thriving village had been reduced to an elementary school, an abandoned Baptist church, and a few nearby homes. Katherine and Louis, along with friends and neighbors, rebuilt and maintained the aging church. Time was also spent looking after neighbors, growing gardens, keeping up the farm and the house, working for the church, and volunteering with several groups for the blind in Waco. But, by far, Katherine's most favorite activity was attending weekend church sing-alongs.

Katherine's resilience, perseverance and adventurous nature was definitely inherited. She descended from early Texas pioneer stock. Her great-grandfather, James Washington Winters, was a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto and a friend of Sam Houston. Katherine was a loving, generous, kind, thoughtful, and giving person; but, most of all, she was a genuine lady.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; 12 brothers and sisters; and a grandson, Casey Ellis.

Survivors include sons, Louis Wayne Hamlin, of Hallsburg, nd aB. R. Hamlin and wife, Margaret, of Ft. Worth; daughters, Nancy Carrol Richards, of Waco, and Patsy Joan Lamb and husband, Harold, also of Waco; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren; brother, M.D. Winters and wife, Betty Jo, of Arlington; sister, Pauline Linus, of Dejon, Minnesota; other relatives and many loving friends.
