David Porter of Luzerne township committed suicide by hanging early Saturday morning. He was a farmer by occupation and lived on a small rented place near Heisterburg. About 4 o'clock on the morning mentioned he arose and went to his barn to feed the stock. Two hours later, when his wife went to call him to breakfast she was horrified to find him hanging by his neck to a manger, with life extinct. Porter had looped a hitching strap around his neck, tied the end of it to the manger and then threw himself at full length upon the floor. The frightened screams of Mrs. Porter attracted the neighbors, and one of them, William Franks, cut the body down.

Porter had always lived in perfect happiness with his family. He was about ? years of age and of temperate habits. Although kind to his family, he was very ? in communicating with his neighbors. For a couple weeks previous to his death, his actions were queer, and were remarked by farmers living near. Insanity was hinted at as this malady is said to be hereditary in the family.

He had been sick a great deal lately, and this is supposed to have preyed upon his ? until he became in a condition bordering on insanity. On Friday evening he told his wife that he was going to die, but did not intimate that he contemplated taking his own life. Porter was in moderate circumstances, was greatly respected in the neighborhood.

He leaves a wife and one child. Interred in the Hopewell cemetery, on Sunday afternoon, and the funeral was largely attended. The occurance has produced sadness in the community. John Porter, the father of the suicide, has been greatly affected by his son's death, and it is feared he will not recover. He is a wealthy man, 75 years of age, and lived near the home of his unfortunate son.
