Renssalear's parents and only brother, James M. Bates, are buried in the Sinclairville Evergreen Cemetery. Rensselaer's son Willard, who at the age of 13 followed him in death, is buried beside him in Applegreen Cemetery. His widow, Bersha appears in the 1880 census, still not remarried, and living in her childhood home on what is now Chautauqua Rd. in Gerry NY, with her parents who were both 81 at the time of that census. She is buried in the cemetery at the Gowanda State Hospital grounds.
Notes for Applegreen Cemetery have Rensselaer's death date as 23 Mar 1859, but Surrogate's Court document regarding the execution of his will states his date of death as 15 March 1860. It is not clear which is correct. It's most likely that the cemetery records are correct and that 15 March 1860 was a date connected with the execution of his will.
