Irene Marker Thias, 93, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on February 18, 2014. She was born in 1921 in Elizabeth, Indiana to Stanley Momford and Elsie Bowling Friedley. Irene graduated from Decatur High School in 1938. After marrying her husband Chester Marker and raising her two children, Irene earned her Education and Master's degrees from Ball State University. She went on to teach elementary school at Claypool Elementary School in Muncie, Indiana.
In addition to being an extraordinary teacher, she was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Muncie and loved gardening, playing golf, watching sporting events, exercising, and bridge. She recently resided at Westminster Village, where she enjoyed spending time with close friends.
She is survived by her son, Timothy Marker and his wife Joyce, of Clarkston, Michigan and her daughter, Elaine Smith, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, her five grandchildren Amy Rychlick (husband Edward), Christopher Smith (wife Natalie), Angie Morris (husband Mark), Cara Daily (husband Gordon), and Timothy Smith (wife Michelle), eight great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Roy Friedley, her sisters, Anna Catherine Alton and Helen Hudson, her husband and father to her children, Chester Marker, her son-in-law, Hastings Smith, and two other beloved husbands, Merrill Wilson and Gus Thias.
