John R. Atwood was born in downtown Potosi to C.E. (Gene) and Emma Atwood on July 8, 1931. He grew up in the farming communities around Potosi and Wylie. He graduated from Wylie in 1950 when it was fully contained on the corner of Buffalo Gap Road and Antilley Road. That is where he met his future wife, Tommie.
John's career spanned 41 years with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. He held various job titles when living in Midland, Seminole, Monahans, and Sweetwater. In 1968, John was transferred back to his home town of Abilene. He retired as Area Manager in 1991.
Survivors include his wife, Tommie; daughter, Cindy and 4 grandchildren, Timothy, Sarah, Micah and Annie all of Huntsville, Alabama; sister, Wanda Keith and husband Hollis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his infant son, John Steven; 4 brothers, Winson, Leslie, James and Russell; sister, Emma Gene.
