Maria and her husband Jasper Shadden pulled up stakes in McMinnville and moved to Eastern Oregon to an area east of Milton-Freewater called Spofford. They got a homestead there. They were not there for long before Jasper took his young family to CA to the gold rush area. Family tale has it that Jasper and Maria were killed by Mexicans during very tense times in that area. They had two young children, Ellen and Frank Shadden. The children were taken back to OR by the US Cavalry after their parent's died. The children were put into the legal guardianship of Jasper's parent's, Thomas Jefferson Shadden and his wife Martha. Jasper's wife Maria's parent's, Ephraim and Sarah Adams also lent a hand to raise the children too I believe.
It will more than likely never be known where Maria and her husband Jasper Shadden were buried. So many people died down there fighting over the gold and from being murdered over tensions between the Mexican's and the native American's too and were hastily buried in shallow graves. Jasper and Maria's homestead was then sold and the money held in a trust fund until their children became of age.
