Kay was born in Colorado, the son of Kay Sr. and Mary Catherine (McKinley) Montgomery. His family moved to Colville WA where both parents died when he was just a child of four. He and his brothers were sent to an orphanage, then to relatives. He moved to the Tacoma WA area as a young man and connected to distant relatives (Griswold) there. He and his brother Milton both married Griswold girls. Mabel and Kay moved to Red Bluff CA along with Mabel's brothers to work at a store in Beegum and as goat herders. Soon they had a daughter, but Mabel died within days of her birth. Working with Clarence Griswold, Kay became acquainted with Florence Linton Nelson, Clarence's sister-in-law, the mother of two girls. They married and settled in Red Bluff where two more children arrived. Kay and Florence lived and worked in Red Bluff, raising their family until his death.
