Gilson James Frederick Fontz Sr., 70, of Millersville, died of cancer Monday at his home.

Born in Millersville, Mr. Fontz graduated from Glen Burnie High School and served in the Army during World War II. He retired as a letter carrier for the Post Office in 1987 after 35 years of service.

He had been a member of Christ Lutheran Church, where he was an active chairman and member of the church council and served as superintendent of the Sunday school. He was also a past worshipful master of the Ben Franklin Lodge of the Tall Cedars.

Surviving are his wife, Betty D. Franklin Fontz, whom he married 42 years ago; one son, sts included playing the guitar, singing gospel music, watching wrestling and crabbing.

He was the widower of Mildred Gross Matthews and the father of the late Ellis Matthews Jr.

Surviving are his mother, Sarah Matthews; five daughters, Gloria Dennis and Freida Nick of Shady Side, Brenda Owens and Rosetta Carter of Annapolis and Joan White of Churchton; three sons, Delmar and Purnell Matthews of Annapolis and Linford Matthews of Shady Side; 27 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are five sisters, Lucille Brown, Jean Johnson and Thelma Holland of Shady Side, Sarah Thompson of Churchton and Mary Tyler of Annapolis; and three brothers, Calvin and Alexander Matthews of Shady Side and Preston Matthews of Churchton.

A Christian wake will be held at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow, with funeral services at noon, at St. Matthew's United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are by Reese and Sons Mortuary.
