He was born October 10, 1928 near Williamstown, MO a son of Homer G and Mada Tompkins Lay. He married Patricia Wright in 1954 and was later married to Rita Lillian Willing on June 29, 1957. She died January 6, 1981.
He was raised in the Williamstown area and attended Bunker Hill, La Belle and Ewing Schools. He later worked in agriculture until he began working as a cook at the Illinois Soldier and Sailors Home in Quincy he later work at a Veterans Home in West Palm Beach, Fl. until his retirement in 1987 and then began as a volunteer with senior services.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Huddleston and her husband Ken of Troy, MO and Carla Froude of Kansas City, MO; four grandchildren, Kendra Rufkahr and her husband Adam of Troy, MO, Kortnie Huddleston of St. Louis, MO, Rick Froude of Kansas City, MO, Jennifer Mayberry and her husband Tom of Kansas City, MO; five great grandchildren; two brothers Ralph Lay and his wife Marilyn and Mervin Lay of Lewistown and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, five sisters, Erma Williams, Loraine Miller, Twila Gibson, Faylene Reardon and Thelma Blakely and four brothers Bruce, Virgil, Melvin and Ursa Lay.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 21, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in Canton with Dr. Tom Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Quincy, IL. Visitation will be held Monday morning from 9 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials be made to Country Aire Retirement Estates of Lewistown or Garden View Care Center in O'Fallon, MO in care of Davis Funeral Home, Canton, MO.
