Thursday, January 30, 1936

Injuries received when his automobile turned over on the gravel road west of Steele Saturday night resulted Wednesday morning in the death of R.C. Steele, local manager of the East Arkansas Builders' Supply Co. Mr. Steele, accompanied by E.S. Britton were enroute to Deering to bring back Mr. Steele's son, Harold, who is employed by the Baker Land Co. in their office at that place.
Mr. Steele was rushed to the Blytheville hospital and his injuries were thought to be slight. He was brought to his home here Monday, however, his condition at 2 p.m. Wednesday morning became serious and he was rushed to Methodist Hospital in Memphis where he died about 10 a.m.
Deceased came to Steele in 1927 to manage the properties and business of this branch of the builders' supply firm. Both Mr. Steele and his estimable family accepted a full share of civic and business responsibilities, and have ever been identified in civic advancement, church interest and progress of their adopted community. In business circles, Mr. Steele was recognized as one of the dependable assets of the town and because he was a good business man, he was ever willing to help in civic improvement, taking if called upon and feeling he could succeed, the post of leadership or committeeman, however, always a worker. He was honored by being elected president of the Lifters Club of this city, serving in 1933-1934. His attention to detail and pleasure in seeing a crowd enjoy themselves, placed him on most every committee to arrange for lunch, dinners and picnics. He served as a Boy Scout committeeman of the club.
In the Methodist Church, he was accepted as a leader and held the post of Sunday School superintendent for over five years and until his death. His loyalty to his church, alike that of his family, has been a sustaining element and aided the church to mark the progress it has made in the past several years.
Robert C. Steele was born in Ozark, Ark., and died suddenly January 29, 1936 after suffering an auto accident and being removed from here to Methodist Hospital. His father, Robert W. Steele, died when the subject of this obituary was but 11 months old.
Of his immediate family, he is survived by his companion and wife, Mable McElroy Steele; two sons, Robert C. Jr., and Harold M., and one daughter, Louise. Louise and Harold are at home. There is also a granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Steele and Mrs. Robert C. Steele, Jr., grouped in the loyal little family circle.
Other relatives surviving are his mother, Mrs. W.C. Conatser of Ozark, Ark., one brother, E.A. Steele of Corning, Ark., one half-brother, Raymond Conatser, and two half-sisters, Mrs. Niva Edwards of Little Rock, Ark., and Mrs. Ella Williams of Fort Smith, Ark.
The funeral will occur Friday at 2 p.m. from the Methodist Church in Steele, conducted by his former pastor, Rev. G.E. Ellis and his present pastor, Rev. M.A. Massey. Members of the Lifters Club will be honorary pallbearers. Interment will be in Mount Zion Cemetery. German Undertaking Co. is in charge of services.
