LANETT -- Mr. Malcolm Clifton Davenport Jr., 76, of Lanett and Fort Mountain, Ga., died Aug. 17, 2001 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Graveside services were held Sunday, Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. at Pinewood Cemetery in West Point, with the Rev. Dan Garrett officiating.

Mr. Davenport is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sarah Lanier Davenport of Lanett and Fort Mountain, Ga.; two sons, Malcolm Clifton V. (Mary Ann W.) Davenport of Lanett, and Lanier M. Sr. (Carol E.) Davenport of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren, Malcolm Clifton Davenport VI, Alexander McKenzie Davenport, Dixon Lanier Davenport and Jefferson Whatley Davenport, all of Lanett, Lanier Merchant Davenport Jr., Steven Ray Davenport and Sarah Byrd Davenport of Chattanooga, Tenn.

Mr. Davenport was born May 16, 1925 in Greer, S.C., the son of the late Malcolm C. Davenport and Maude Givens Davenport of Greenville, S.C. He graduated from Greenville High School in Greenville. He then went on to graduate from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kingspoint, N.Y. with a commission in the United States Navy. He also earned an engineer's license in the U.S. Merchant Marine. Mr. Davenport graduated from Auburn University in 1949 with a degree in chemical engineering. At Auburn, he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

Mr. Davenport began his business career in 1949 with Pepperell Manufacturing Company in Opelika, Ala. In 1951 he moved to Fairfax, where he worked in the laboratory for Fairfax Mill, then a division of West Point Manufacturing Company. Later he transferred to the Lantuck division where he remained until 1968 when he moved to the corporate offices in West Point. There he purchased chemicals and dyes for all divisions until his retirement in 1987. As a consequence of the merger between Pepperell Manufacturing Company and West Point Manufacturing Company, he had continuous service with WestPoint Pepperell Manufacturing Company for his entire professional career of 38 years.

While living in Fairfax, Mr. Davenport attended Fairfax Christian Church where he served on the Board of Deacons and numerous other committees. Upon moving to Lanett in 1969, Mr. Davenport joined Spring Road Christian Church where he was an active member until his death.
