Alexander Johnston Barclay was the son of John Young Barclay and Isabella Johnston . He was enumerated at the home of his parents at Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in the 1840 US Census. After the death of his parents in 1841, Alexander went to live with his maternal grandparents, Alexander and Elizabeth Johnston, at Unity, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Alexander, along with all his siblings, was baptized at Christ Episcopal Church at Greensburg March 3, 1843.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy for service during the War with Mexico and achieved the rank of midshipman. After the war he returned to Unity (1850 US Census). Alexander left Pennsylvania for the California gold fields in the 1850s and was a miner residing at Colombia, Tuolumne County, by July 1860 (1860 US Census).

With the coming of the Civil War, Alexander enlisted as a private at Stockton, California, September 26, 1861, and was mustered into Company A, 3rd California Infantry, September 28. Private Barclay was mustered out for disability at Stockton September 17, 1862 (Orton, 526).

Alexander returned to Pennsylvania where he married Sarah E. Septer (born Feb. 1843, PA) in Westmoreland County on September 2, 1863. He was a farmer living at Ligonier, Pennsylvania, by 1870 and was still there in 1900 (1870, 1900 US Census). Alexander filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at Ligonier July 10, 1891, and received application No. 1,037,991 and certificate No. 924,681. He refiled for his veteran's pension February 24, 1907. After his death, Sarah filed for a Civil War widow's pension at Ligonier February 24, 1913, and received application No. 1,002,599 and certificate No. 767,508. Sarah was the mother of seven children, with three still living in June 1900.
