Merle G. Nye, 50, of 66 Church Street, Cortland druggist for 14 years, died this morning at 12:35, following an illness of more than two years. Although long ill, death came unexpectedly. He was uptown yesterday.
Mr. Nye was born in Groton, October 12, 1885, a son of the late Edwin I. and Olive Nye. He graduated from the Buffalo College of Pharmacy in 1908 and entered the drug business in Cortland, December 11, 1911. The store is located at 53 Main Street and was formerly owned by C.F. Brown.
He was married June 29, 1907 to Nina Roberts who survives. He was a member of the First Congregational Church. He was initiated into Cortlandville lodge 470, F. & A.M., November 5, 1906. He was exalted to Cortland Chapter 194, Royal Arch Masons, November 28, 1917, and knighted in Cortland Commandery 50, December 28, 1917. He was also a member of the Lodge of Perfection and the Central City Consistory, A.S.S.R. He was a prominent Rotarian. For years he was one of the most active supporters of Redpath Chautauqua in Cortland.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Miss Ruth Nye, who teaches in Hudson Falls; four sisters, Mrs. Nina Ashley of Groton, Mr. Blanche Reynolds of Syracuse, Mrs. W.J. Sage of White Plains and Mrs. Jasper Williamson of Ithaca; one brother, F.J. Nye of Syracuse, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at the late home, 66 Church Street, Rev. Darrell J. Westlake, pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will be made in the Cortland Rural Cemetery.
