Eleanor Backhaus Lamkin passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, in the Rockdale Residence and Rehab Center, on her 94th birthday. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, February 9, 2014, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. Burial will follow in Marlow Cemetery near Cameron. Rev. Ed Truelson will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, February 8, at Phillips & Luckey.

Eleanor was born near Rockdale, Texas, to the late John and Lena (Stork) Backhaus. She was raised in the vanished community of Bushdale, Texas. Eleanor was baptized on March 21, 1920, and confirmed on April 1, 1934, at Peace Lutheran Church in Rockdale. After graduating from high school in 1938, she attended business college. When she graduated from the college, she worked as a secretary at Rockdale State Bank for 37 years. On December 20, 1947, she and J.L. Lamkin were married in Rockdale. She was a charter member of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Cameron since 1968.

She was preceded in death by her husband J.L. Lamkin on March 1, 1988; sister, Lillian Backhaus; a brother, Alton Backhaus; a sister-in-law, Agnes Backhaus; and a niece, Judy Kay Backhaus.

Survivors include brother, Willard Backhaus, of Pearland; sister-in-law, Betty Backhaus, of Rockdale; niece, Janie Lightsey and husband, Steve, of Fairfield; nephews: Randy Backhaus and wife, Kay, of Rockdale, Kurt Backhaus, of Houston, and Darren Backhaus and wife, Laura of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; great-nieces and nephews: Chris Lightsey, Kyle Lightsey, Morgan Backhaus, Brady Backhaus and Meredith Backhaus.
