John was about 12 years old when his parents came west. They moved on to Palmyra , and finally settled in Spanish Fork . He received his education at home and in public schools. He did much to help his mother financially and otherwise.
After his marriage, he made a living farming. Because of problems with the Indians, he also helped as a guard. He was called to help settle the Muddy Mission in Southern Utah , where they remained for a time.
They returned to Spanish Fork in 1871 where they purchased land. They lived in a log house until they built a home. His son helped him obtain some rock from Spanish Fork Canyon when a slide came, crushing John under tons of rock and killing him.
He lived the principles of the gospel and was always helping others less fortunate than he.
