Esther Edie Bowen was the first of nine children born to her parents, Elwood and Susan (Townsend) Bowen. While she was born in Pittsburgh, by the time she was two, the family had moved to Brooklyn, New York. When she was 12, the family had settled in Camden, New Jersey, where she graduated from high school.

Esther worked as a housekeeper in New Jersey until 1934 when she moved to Orlando, Florida, and became an ordained minister with the Assembly of God. She had a beautiful alto voice and loved to sing. She was also a talented poet and wrote many poems. Her life-long companion was Isabella Alexander. Isabella was also a pastor and accomplished singer.

Esther lived most of her life in her own home in Orlando, but spent her last days in the Life Care Center in Altamonte Springs, Florida, where she died in 1991 at the age of 92. She is survived by her son, Art (Maxine) Bowen and one granddaughter, Nancy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Paul Bowen; 7 sisters: Edith Packard, Grace Bowen, Olive Pfeiffer, Clara Bowen, Helen Hoffman, Mary Bowen and Florence Bowen; and friend, Isabella.
