CAPT. JAMES G. KENAN
Member of Prominent North Carolina Family Passes Away at His Home in Duplin – Highly Esteemed in Wilmington
A long-distance telephone message yesterday morning conveyed to relatives and friends in this city the distressing news of the death of Capt. James G. Kenan, of Duplin county, father of Graham Kenan, Esq., of this city, and member of one of the oldest and most distinguished families of the State.
Capt. Kenan passed away at 10:15 o'clock yesterday morning at his plantation about eighteen miles from Kenansville, after an illness of only a few hours with heart disease of which he had been a sufferer at times for years. The death was entirely unexpected and came as a great shock to relatives and friends. The funeral arrangement will not be made until absent member of the family arrive but the services will probably be held some time tomorrow.
Capt. Kenan was the last of a family of two sons and a daughter of the late Owen L. Kenan and was born near Kenansville of Scotish-Irish parentage, being descended from Thomas Kenan, who came to this country 175 years ago and settled in Duplin county. Numbered among his forebears were several patriots of Revolution fame and the family has been prominent until this day in the history of North Carolina. Capt. Kenan was a brother of the late lamented Capt. William Rand Kenan of this city; Col. Thos. S. Kenan, clerk of the State Supreme Court, who passed away on December 23rd last, and Miss Annie Kenan, who passed away a few years ago, following injuries received in an accident near this city. He was truly a gentleman of the old school, of splendid presence, urbanity and a man of the strictest honesty and integrity. He had served the county of Duplin several terms as sheriff and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of his fellow citizens in every walk of life. At the outbreak of the war, with his distinguished brothers, he early enlisted in the cause of the Confederacy and was captain of a company in the Forty-third Regiment, North Carolina troops, C. S. A., having been captured at Gettysburg and confined later in a Federal prison. He was a gallant soldier and numbered among his comrades many of the veterans of the war in this city and throughout Eastern Carolina.
Capt. Kenan was about seventy-two years old and is survived by his wife, three sons and one daughter, the children being Dr. Owen Kenan, of New York, resident physician for Palm Springs hotels; Miss Emily Kenan, of Kenansville, Mr. Thos. S. Kenan, of Atlanta, Ga., and Graham Kenan, Esq. of the law firm of Kenan & Stacy in this city. Mr. Graham Kenan and Miss Emily Kenan were in New York at the time of their father's death, but were at once notified and expect to reach Wallace, N. C., this morning. Mr. Thos. S. Kenan and wife, of Atlanta, will reach Wilmington this noon and will leave this evening to attend the funeral. Mr. W. R. Kenan, Jr., of Lockport, N. Y., a nephew, and Miss Sarah Kenan of this city, a niece, will leave this morning for the funeral.
Capt. Kenan was loved and respected wherever he was known. Many Wilmington people knew him and were proud to claim his friendship and enjoyed his companionship when occasion offered. His death is sincerely regretted everywhere and those who have sustained in his death a great bereavement have the tenderst sympathy of a host of friends in their loss.
