Nancy Tucker Wilson Drewry Mann

Nancy Wilson Mann, 82, retired teacher, freelance writer, painter and granddaughter of John Tyler, president of the United States, died Feb. 19, 1995, at her home on 66th Street, Virginia Beach. She received her B.A. in French from Sweet Briar College in 1932, and in 1969, her M.E. in teaching the deaf and hard-of-hearing at the University of Virginia. She retired as a teacher in 1972. Two of her lifetime interests were in defending freedom of belief and in promoting respect for all people regardless of race or religion. She belonged to several clubs including the Alliance Francaise and the Poetry Societies of Virginia and of America, the Norfolk Society of Arts, the Virginia Writers Club, Tidewater Artists, the Virginia Beach Center for the Arts, and the Artists at Work. She published a book, "Tylers and Gardiners on the Village Green,'' and under her maiden name, Nancy Tucker Wilson a number of poems. As a painter, she received a certificate of honorable mention from the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., for her impressionist work in oil. Her works are on the file in the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Drewry Sanger of Virginia Beach; two sons, John Tyler Drewry of Great Falls, Va., and James Southhall Wilson Drewry of Alexandria, Va., all from her first marriage to John Metcalf Drewry of Petersburg. There are also seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a sister, Alida Wilson Davison of Charlottesville, Va. She married a second time in 1970 to James Mann Jr. of Norfolk, who died in 1977. A church service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, 1995, at Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church by the Rev. Andrew MacBeth. Burial will be at a later date in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk. There will be a visitation today from 4 to 6 p.m. in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the Tidewater Chapter of the American Red Cross.
