1860 NC Census HH 1098
He was a farmer married to Mary Stuart prior to the War when he enlisted, at age 21, on July 20, 1862 and mustered in at the rank of Corporal in Company L of the 58th North Carolina Troops in Ashe County.
He enlisted with his two younger brothers, James Monroe Barker and William Poindexter Barker. James was discharged on Monday, April 6, 1863 - just before Calvin's death that Sunday. (He had previously been on furlough since Nov. 13, 1862 for "otorrhea arising from caries" - a very severe ear/head infection due to tooth decay). It is possible that their father, Alfred James Barker, would eventually enlist in a unit that would serve further east, (but this would be unusual as he would be into his forties by then). The youngest brother, William Poindexter, continued in the 58th NC (Army of Tennessee) at least through the battles for Atlanta.
Calvin died in Clinton, TN, where the 58th North Carolina was quartered for the winter of 1862-1863 (records indicate it was particularly harsh). The specific cause of death is unknown, but he was among 14 members of the 58th North Carolina Troops who died in Clinton during that winter.
Mary Stuart would go on to marry William Roderick Neaves (Meorial 94581036 ). One of their grand-daughters, Dora Alice Blevins (Neaves), would marry Edward Eugene Washington Barker, Calvin's great-nephew!
UNFORTUNATELY, THE FINAL RESTING PLACE OF THESE 14 MEN IS STILL YET UNKNOWN.
IT IS THOUGHT THESE MEN WERE BURIED SOMEWHERE AROUND CLINTON PERHAPS ON OR NEAR THE GROUNDS OF SUNSET CEMETERY.
PERHAPS WE CAN ECHO THE SUCCESS OF THE REDISCOVERY OF THE DELAP CEMETERY? It's a great story:

PLEASE LEAVE A MESSAGE IF YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE ANY INFORMATION TO THE CAUSE OF LOCATING THE BURIAL PLACE. THANKS!
