A resident of Echo Lodge of Fort Qu'Appelle, Sask, Mrs Mary Augustine passed away Jan 4, 1993 at the Fort Qu'Appelle Union Hospital. She was 92 years of age.
Mary (nee Thiele) Augustine was born at Austria Jan 15, 1900, a daughter of Peter and Magdeline Thiele. In 1903 the family moved to Canada and homesteaded on a farm in the Killaly, Sask district. At the age of 21 on Jan 12, 1921 Mary was united in marriage to Joseph Augustine in Killaly and moved to a farm in the Cana, Sask district for two years.
However, farming conditions were poor because of drought. In hopes of a better life, the couple moved to Lorlie, Sask where they tried farming again. For the second time, drought forced Mary and Joseph to move on. In 1929 they purchased a 1/2 section of land at Grayson, Sask but the times wre still difficult, there was no money, no grain, no feed and thus no means for survival.
Finally in 1939, determined to start a new life, they moved to Lady Lake, Sask where they purchased an old hall that needed a lot of repairing which took many hours of hard labor. Eventually the hall was transformed into a little business which included pool tables and a confectionery and gas station. Mary ran the business while Joe worked on the highway construction. In 1965 the business was given up and Mary and Joseph decided to travel to various places in Canada and the US before settling in Fort Qu'Appelle, Sask.
In 1971 Joseph died, leaving Mary to live by herself until 1978 when she became a resident of Echo Lodge where she continued to remain independent and kept her body and mind active by reading, looking after her own business affairs, and watching informative shows on television.
She was predeceased by her parents; and husband Joseph in 1971; two daughters - Regina Augustine, 22 days, in November 1929, and Magdalena Augustine, 13 days, in September, 1930; a brother Frank Thiele. She leaves to mourn her death and to cherish her life: one sister, Louise Fox of Rouleau, Sask; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Prayers were held Thursday, Jan 7, 1993 from the Chapel of Bailey's Funeral Home, Melville, with Roch Pilon officiating. Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Friday, Jan 8, 1993 at 10 a.m. from St Henry's Roman Catholic Church, Melville, with Father Rudy Nowakowski, OMI, as the celebrant.
Commentator was Anne Letwinetz, Lottie Wihak did the readings and sanctuary minister was Cornelius Woloschuk. Organist was Elma Killick. Choir director Billie Sastaunik with the church senior choir led in the hymns, "Amazing Grace," "Peace Prayer," and "Be Not Afraid." Altar servers were Darryl Quennelle, Shawn Meredyk and Troy Stewart.
Internment followed in the St Henry's Parish Cemetery with Rudy Appel, Ken Fortin, Randy Augustine, John Augustine, Dwight Pawelko and Donald Meyer as casket bearers.
Arrangements were by Bailey's Funeral Home, Melville.
