Margaret was born July 2, 1923, in Minot, North Dakota, to Edward and Margaret (Stevens) Vardsveen. There she was raised and graduated from Minot High School in 1941. She was united in marriage to Edward Alger on November 11, 1943, in Minot. The couple made their home in Wells, Minn., where she worked for J.C. Penney and later for Peterson's Department Store. They also lived in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., and Winona, Minn. Margaret and Ed moved to Kenyon in 2003.
Margaret enjoyed cooking and baking. She became well known for her chocolate cookies which she generously shared with friends and family alike. She often sent several jars of cookies with her son, Steve, to share with the girls' basketball team that he coached. We will all miss the "Cookie Lady" very much. Margaret also enjoyed playing card games and dominos with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her five children: Steve (and Karen) Alger, of Kenyon, Minn.; Greg (and Mary) Alger, of Wells, Minn.; Jeff (and Sally) Alger, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; Dave Alger, of Sparta, Wis.; and Karen (and Paul) DeJardine, of Sturgeon Bay, Wis. She was blessed with 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Margaret is also survived by her sister, Betty (and Bob) Edwards, of Edina.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Alger, in 2010; her parents; and seven brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 31, 2014, from 10-11 a.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenyon. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 31, 2014, at 11 a.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church with Intern Pastor Wade Reddy officiating.
