Vincent H. Bitzer, 87, Gettysburg, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at the Avera Oahe Manor, Gettysburg.

Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, January 31, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Gettysburg. Burial was in the church cemetery, with military honors.

Vincent Harold Bitzer was born April 9, 1926 in Tolstoy, SD, to Harold M. and Elma (Glanzman) Bitzer. He attended school at Tolstoy, Onaka and graduated from Hoven High School in 1944. Vincent enlisted in the United States Navy, serving from 1944 to 1946.

When Vincent was discharged from the Navy, he played amateur baseball in Alma, WI.

On February 18, 1950, he was united in marriage to Mary Baus at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hoven. They made their home in Tolstoy and Vincent went to work for Standard Oil driving fuel truck. Following this, he became a rural mail carrier, delivering mail until his retirement in 1986. Vincent and Mary remained in Tolstoy until 2004 when they made the move to Gettysburg. In April 2013, they entered the Oahe Manor, residing there until the time of his death.

Vincent enjoyed spending time golfing, hunting, fishing, bowling and playing baseball. He especially enjoyed these activities with his grandchildren. Vincent was a member of the Tolstoy and Hoven School Boards and the Hoven American Legion.

His life will be cherished by his wife, Mary of Gettysburg; his children: Lexie (Dennis) Hilmoe of Coon Rapids, MN, Mary Lynn (Ken) Brown of Gettysburg, Kathy Rost of Springfield, OR, Jim (Kathy) Bitzer of Seneca, Bob (Kathy) Bitzer of Denver, CO, Liz (Rick) McGuire of Lake Preston, Tom (Kari) Bitzer of Loveland, CO and Michelle (Rick) Vogel of Gettysburg; 25 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren and one sister, LaVonne (Philip) Vik of Sioux Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son in law, John Rost; and two grandchildren: Jared and Jeffrey Bitzer.

Luce Funeral Home has been entrusted with Vincent's arrangements.
