FORT WORTH - James Michael Calhoun, a prominent rancher and horseman, died of a heart attack Tuesday at the Veal Ranch in Breckenridge. He was 63.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth, where he was a member. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park.
Mr. Calhoun was a well-known breeder of American Quarter Horses and was active in national cutting horse circles.
"He enjoyed the prestige of having a past National Cutting Horse Association world champion open cutting horse, as he trained and rode the first stallion, King's Pistol, to the championship," said his brother-in-law, Tom B. Saunders.
Mr. Calhoun had been president, vice president and chairman of the executive board of the NCHA and president of the North Texas Cutting Horse Association. He was also a past director of the American Quarter Horse Association and was a national Quarter Horse judge.
He was a director of the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show and a member of the Cutting Horse Heritage Foundation, the Parker County Sheriff's Posse, the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, Kappa Alpha fraternity and Ridglea Country Club.
Mr. Calhoun was a graduate of New Mexico Military Institute and Oklahoma State University.
Survivors: Wife, Jane Venita "Skeet" Calhoun; son, Jim Calhoun Jr. of Breckenridge; daughter, Virginia Jane "Tisa" Brian of Weatherford; two sisters, Dora Moffitt of Granbury and Louie Altflish of Boston; and five grandchildren.
